The Scranton mayor wins one of the country’s most competitive House races
WASHINGTON D.C. (November 3, 2026) — New Politics endorsed candidate Paige Cognetti has defeated Republican Rep. Rob Bresnahan to win Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District. As mayor of Scranton, Cognetti has built her career on accountability and cleaning up local government.
A member of the DCCC’s Red to Blue program, Cognetti was one of 20 House challengers New Politics backed this cycle in the districts that will decide the House majority.
Emily Cherniack, Founder and Executive Director of New Politics, released the following statement:
“Paige Cognetti has spent her public life fixing things other people were content to leave broken. As mayor, she took over a struggling city government and turned it around, one decision at a time. She’ll bring that same steady leadership to Washington, where she’ll focus on getting real results for the families she represents. Paige has spent her career earning people’s trust, and tonight voters rewarded her for it.”
