The AmeriCorps alum and Milwaukee County Executive defeats Rep. Tom Tiffany, bringing a new generation of servant leadership to the governor’s office.

WASHINGTON D.C. (November 3, 2026) — New Politics endorsed candidate David Crowley has been elected Governor of Wisconsin, defeating Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany and becoming the first Black governor in the state’s history. An AmeriCorps alum, Crowley served in the Wisconsin State Assembly before becoming the youngest person and first African American elected Milwaukee County Executive.

New Politics first backed Crowley in his 2015 race for Milwaukee Common Council and has supported him through every campaign since, from the State Assembly to the County Executive’s office to tonight’s victory.

Emily Cherniack, Founder and Executive Director of New Politics, released the following statement:

“I first met David Crowley more than ten years ago, when he was a young AmeriCorps alum running for city council in Milwaukee. Even then, it was clear he saw public office as a way to serve, and he has proven it at every level since. Tonight, Wisconsin chose a leader who has spent his whole adult life in service to his community. New Politics exists to find servant leaders like David and stick with them for the long haul. We could not be prouder.”

Sarah Trone Garriott keeps winning in places where Democrats aren't supposed to win, and tonight was her biggest win yet. Sarah’s service began long before politics, as an AmeriCorps VISTA member, a hospital chaplain, and a pastor in communities across Iowa.
