The AmeriCorps alum and Lutheran minister wins a top DCCC Red to Blue race in a district Republicans have held since 2022.
WASHINGTON D.C. (November 4, 2026) — Lutheran Minister and Iowa State Senator Sarah Trone Garriott has defeated Republican Rep. Zach Nunn to win Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District. Trone Garriott began her career of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA member before becoming a hospital chaplain, a Lutheran minister, and an Iowa State Senator.
New Politics endorsed Trone Garriott in July 2025, more than a year before Election Day, and played a key role in helping her to clear the primary field and build one of the most robust Red to Blue campaigns in the country. Sarah has a record of winning tough races, flipping a Republican-held state senate seat and holding it even as Donald Trump carried it in 2024. Her win was key to Democrats retaking the House tonight.
Emily Cherniack, Founder and Executive Director of New Politics, released the following statement:
“Sarah Trone Garriott keeps winning in places where Democrats aren't supposed to win, and tonight was her biggest win yet. Sarah’s service began long before politics, as an AmeriCorps VISTA member, a hospital chaplain, and a pastor in communities across Iowa. She has spent her whole life bringing people together across faiths and parties, and voters in Iowa's 3rd District noticed. New Politics backed Sarah early because we knew what she was capable of, and tonight Iowa and the country saw it too.”
