Retired Marine Corps drill instructor and 20-year military veteran JoAnna Mendoza secures the AZ-06 Democratic nomination, setting up a November challenge to Rep. Juan Ciscomani in one of the country's top DCCC Red to Blue races

WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 21, 2026) New Politics endorsed candidate, JoAnna Mendoza, has secured the Democratic nomination for Arizona's 6th Congressional District. Mendoza, a retired Marine Corps drill instructor who enlisted at 17 and served 20 years in the Navy and Marine Corps, will now take on Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani in November in a district Democrats see as critical to retaking the House. Mendoza was named to the DCCC's Red to Blue program earlier this year, and has consistently outraised Ciscomani this cycle.

Emily Cherniack, Founder and Executive Director of New Politics, released the following statement:

“Jo Mendoza is the real deal. She has spent her entire life answering the call to serve. She enlisted at 17, spent 20 years training and leading Marines, and did it all as the daughter of farmworkers who never had anything handed to them. Arizona's 6th District needs someone like Jo in Congress who knows what it means to put the mission first. New Politics is proud to have stood behind her through this primary, and we're proud to stand behind her as she takes on Ciscomani and flips this seat in November.”
