The AmeriCorps Public Allies Alum and Milwaukee County Executive's Come-From-Behind Win Sets Up a November Battle for the Governor's Mansion as Crowley Seeks to Become Wisconsin's First Black Governor

WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 12, 2026) New Politics endorsed candidate David Crowley has won the Democratic nomination for Governor of Wisconsin in a major upset. New Politics has backed Crowley since his first city council race in 2015, supported him immediately when he entered the gubernatorial primary, and stuck with him as one of the only national organizations to endorse him in this race.

Emily Cherniack, Founder and Executive Director of New Politics, released the following statement:

“Leadership was on the ballot in Wisconsin last night and David Crowley won. New Politics first supported David in 2015 when he was a Public Allies alum running for Milwaukee City Council. David lost that race but New Politics stuck with him. We backed him when he ran for State Representative in 2016 and won, and again when he ran for Milwaukee County Executive in 2019. Tonight, 11 years later, David Crowley won the gubernatorial primary in Wisconsin. The foundation of public service experience he's built over the past decade has prepared him to tackle Wisconsin's biggest challenges and make a real, lasting impact as Governor. New Politics exists to back exceptional servant leaders like David and we are proud to stand with him as he takes this fight to the general election.”
