WASHINGTON D.C.—New Politics’ New Power Project today endorsed US Air Force veteran Josey Garcia for State Representative in Texas’ 124th House District. Emily Cherniack, Founder and Executive Director of New Politics released the following statement:

"Josey Garcia has seen firsthand so many of the obstacles keeping her San Antonio neighbors from thriving, and as their next State Representative, she’ll do whatever it takes to bring folks together and deliver for her community. Her empathy and commitment to empowering our most vulnerable are sorely needed in local government, and we look forward to seeing her impact when she gets to the state house. About Josey Garcia

Josey Garcia is a retired Air Force veteran running for Texas House District 124. She began her military career at Lackland Air Force Base, which led to her making San Antonio her forever home after twenty years of service to our country. Josey’s sense of duty and a desire to give back to her community is what has motivated her to run for office. She’s now a small business owner whose life experiences have shaped her political goals. Her top priorities are fixing the foster care crisis in our state, developing post-COVID assistance programs for small and minority-owned businesses, improving veteran resources, and creating additional resources for seniors, those with disabilities, families, and caretakers. Josey spent part of her childhood in the foster care system, therefore, she knows the battles many children and caregivers face. She believes it’s incumbent upon our state officials to fix Child Protective Services to ensure the safety and security of every child in the system with the ultimate goal of finding a forever home. She is a mother of eight children,  two of whom are disabled. Therefore, she possesses an intimate knowledge of what needs to be done to provide adequate assistance and resources to families. Having served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Josey has a unique understanding of the district's rich military history and veteran specific issues. She understands the mental health issues these brave men and women battle with every day, which ultimately affect our entire community. Josey has been a constant advocate on these issues, from testifying before local and state governments to volunteering and organizing groups to support these causes. She is dedicated to serving her community each and every day and will always make the needs of her constituents a top priority.

About New Power

An initiative of New Politics, which itself aims to lower the barriers of entry into politics for outstanding leaders with military or national service backgrounds, the New Power Project is uniquely focused on recruiting and empowering values-driven individuals who have grown up in marginalized or underserved communities. We focus on community-based leaders who are ready to seek office now. The New Power Project will reach out to potential candidates through a number of national networks, including in partnership with Opportunity Youth United. New Power will help candidates overcome the barriers that so often prevent people like them from seeking and winning public office, barriers similar to those faced by women and working class candidates such as lack of social capital, absence of a fundraising base, lack of the “right credentials,” and many more.  The New Power Project’s mission is to break down these barriers and expand the pathways into elected office for a new generation of servant leaders.

Throughout his life, Tom has demonstrated an unwavering instinct to serve – and whether in uniform or out, he’s consistently sought to find solutions, bring folks together, and get things done. With roots firmly planted in the district where he’s raising his children, we know there’s no one better suited to represent his neighbors in Annapolis. About Tom Smith

Tom Smith is a former combat medic, firefighter, refugee aid worker, and a proud Democrat. As a husband and foster parent to two amazing kids, Tom is seeking to serve Maryland House of Delegates District 14 with courage and compassion. After graduating from the Air Force Academy, Tom deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan to lead teams of medics into combat. Seeing the suffering and injustice that people face around the world, he decided to dedicate his life to service. This devotion led to him fighting forest fires here in the U.S., working with veteran-led NGO’s in a Syrian refugee camp, and responding to an earthquake in Ecuador. Tom has seen how powerful an act of service can be—and how challenging, yet rewarding, it can be to create positive change. The divisiveness of the 2016 presidential election made Tom realize that his service was needed back home, and after helping a fellow veteran run for Congress, Tom decided to join the fight himself. He decided to work on Capitol Hill to craft bipartisan legislation as the Policy Director for the For Country Caucus. Tom has established deep roots in Burtonsville, and he and his wife Amy became foster parents in 2020. With his two young boys in our public school system, Tom will fight to create a better future for all our children.

From a young age, she has consistently found ways to empower those around her regardless of where they come from or how they vote. For Bobbie, public service isn’t about power or politics, it’s about people. Bobbie’s North Star has always been to find a solution and get things done, and that's why New Politics is proud to endorse this tireless servant leader. Because we know that she’s going to get things done on behalf of her Mesa County neighbors and demonstrate just what bold and responsible governance looks like.”

About Bobbie Daniel

Born in Meeker, Colorado, and raised in Palisade, CO, Bobbie is the daughter of a hairdresser and a coal miner. At age 10, she was already serving her community, helping out at a local Mesa County Pregnancy Center with her mom, She was accepted into the domestic Peace Corps program -AmeriCorps and was stationed at the old Fort Lowery Air Force base in Aurora, Colorado, serving the most vulnerable in Colorado. Shortly after, she jumped into business ownership at the young age of 23. By the time she was 33, she had a decade of salon ownership under her belt. She used that knowledge and experience to write her book, Solutions from a Nobody. After the government shut down in 2013, she knew more regular people needed to be involved; policy should get back to a government that serves the people rather than rule over them. She founded Mom Empower Moms, an organization supporting civic engagement and foundational principles. She is the current Chair of the Board of Colorado Women’s Alliance, a statewide policy organization focused on research, advocacy, and education around public policy that matters most to women.

From a blue-collar upbringing to a waitress, to a successful business owner, to an author, to advocating for women, Bobbie has lived the American Dream while bringing others up with her. Daniel radiates authenticity and enthusiasm. She is the perfect blend of determination and service while fighting for small government and defending the American Dream that she steadily has achieved.
