Stephen is a thoughtful, socially responsible democrat who believes government transparency, accountability, and civility are essential attributes for any public official. Stephen Valentine is a graduate of North Carolina Central University School of Law. He earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College and his graduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Stephen is retired United States Army Reserve Officer and combat veteran with service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Stephen is also a former Presidential Management Fellow with the U.S. State Department and Congressional staffer for the late Donald Payne of NJ. He also served as a detailed Special Assistant United States Attorney in the criminal division of the United States Attorney’s Office in the District of Columbia. He is a member of the DC Bar, the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.

Presently, Stephen is the Director and Supervising Attorney of the Veterans Law Clinic at the NC Central University School of Law. He holds professional memberships in the National Association of Social Workers, The American Bar Association and The National Bar Association.

Stephen is a life member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and he is a member of Doric Lodge #28, Drucilla Chapter #19 Order of the Eastern Stars, Durham Consistory #218 and Zafa Temple #176. He is also life member of the VFW and the American Legion. He has worked in his community as a member of the Ellerbee Creek Homeowner’s Association, an election day poll worker/judge, and Democratic Party Precinct Chair (#29). He also served on the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People, and he attends St. Joseph A.M.E. Church. Stephen is married to Valarie Valentine, and they are the proud parents of three children.
